Lesson 3 of 25

The Power of Organized Knowledge (Context)

A model knows a great deal about the world and nothing at all about your situation, so generic advice is the only honest thing it can give you until you supply the facts. Context is simply handing over what you know - the product, the people, the history, the constraint - as an organised block rather than expecting it to be guessed.

Reach for it whenWhen the answer you got was technically correct but useless, because it could have been written for anybody.

Perplexity's context problem is the reverse of the others: it has excellent live context about the world and none about you, and it cannot hold your private background the way Custom Instructions or a Project can. A Space is the closest thing - put your standing brief and your files there and ask within it. The real use, though, is sourcing the external half of your context: the competitor prices, the legal position, the survey everyone cites, the market figure you were going to guess.

Worth knowingDo not paste confidential context - an employee's performance history, internal financials - into a search-based tool just to get better advice. For the Anjali conversation, use Perplexity only for the impersonal legal and policy groundwork, and keep the person out of it.
  • Keep a standing brief in a Space, not retyped each time.
  • Use it for external context; keep private details out.
  • Ask what the authoritative source says, not what is advisable.
  • Ask for the law or rule with its date and jurisdiction.
  • Take sourced findings to a writing tool to draft.
Example 1: The Vacuum vs. The Informed Analysis

Instead of

Write a marketing email for my new product.

Perplexity version

Before I write a launch email, I want the external context I am currently guessing at. We are launching a smart water bottle in India - tracks intake, nudges you when you have not drunk, 30-day battery, syncs with Apple Health and Google Fit - aimed at health-conscious tech professionals aged 25-40 in Indian metros.

1. Which smart water bottles and hydration trackers are currently available to Indian buyers, through which channels, and at what rupee price? Table it: Product | Price | Where sold | Key claim | Source.
2. What do Indian reviewers and buyers actually complain about in this category? Group the complaints by frequency and cite them. Use Social focus for owner discussion and say where it came from.
3. What does current reporting say about the Indian market for connected health and wearable devices, and about abandonment - people buying a health gadget and stopping use? Include dates.
4. What claims about hydration and health are well supported, and which widely repeated ones are not? I need to know what I can safely say in marketing copy.
5. Are there Indian advertising or labelling rules that constrain health claims for a device like this? Name the regulator and the rule, with a link.

Cite everything. Save to a Space called 'ZenFlow launch'. I will write the email itself in another tool using answers 2 and 4 to shape the objections and the claims.

Example 2: Generic Advice vs. A Tailored Solution

Instead of

How should I handle a difficult conversation with an employee?

Perplexity version

Important: do not paste an employee's performance history, name or private circumstances into a web-search tool. Keep the person out of it. Use Perplexity for the impersonal groundwork only, and prepare the actual conversation in a tool where the context stays private.

The impersonal research question: I am a manager in India about to put an employee on a formal Performance Improvement Plan for repeatedly missed deadlines, after two informal conversations.

1. Under Indian employment law, what does a formal performance improvement process need to include to be procedurally sound - documentation, notice, duration, review, the employee's right to respond? Cite the statute, rule or authoritative guidance, name the jurisdiction, and give the date. Flag where it varies by state or by whether the role is covered by shops and establishments legislation.
2. What do recognised HR bodies publish as good practice for a PIP - structure, length, what makes one defensible versus what makes it look like a pre-written exit? Cite the organisations.
3. What does the published research say about why PIPs commonly fail, and what distinguishes the ones that lead to genuine improvement? Cite the studies or reviews.
4. What are the documented risks of a manager asking an employee about personal circumstances in a performance meeting, in the Indian context? Cite guidance.

Every answer with a source and a date. Where something is contested or varies, say so rather than giving me one clean rule.

Example 3: A Shot in the Dark vs. Data-Driven Content

Instead of

Write a social media post about our city.

Perplexity version

I run the official Hyderabad tourism account and want the factual context before writing festival follow-up posts. Research, not copywriting.

1. What has actually been reported about this year's Hyderabad Food Festival - attendance, dates, what was there, who covered it? Give me the figures with sources and dates, so anything I put in a post is a number I can stand behind.
2. What do published surveys and tourism department data say about why visitors come to Hyderabad, and where culinary tourism ranks? Cite the source and the year - if the 'number one reason' claim comes from a specific survey, I want its name and methodology.
3. What are the current visitor-arrival trends for Hyderabad and Telangana, and what does seasonality look like month by month? This decides which off-season I am actually pushing. Cite the data source.
4. Which Hyderabad food places, dishes and neighbourhoods are currently getting attention from Indian food writers and creators? Use Social focus and tell me where each came from - these are candidates for the 'hidden gems' post, and I would rather not promote somewhere that has just had a bad month.
5. What food-tourism campaigns have other Indian cities run recently, and what was reported about results?

Cite everything with dates. Mark anything you could not verify as unverified rather than smoothing it over. Save to a Space called 'Hyderabad tourism'. I will write the posts in another tool using only the numbers you could source.
