Lesson 9 of 25

The Ladder of Logical Progression (Step-by-Step Thinking)

Start with the honest part: adding the phrase "think step by step" to a prompt does very little on current models, because they already reason before answering. What still works, and works well, is you deciding the stages - naming the parts of the task, their order, and what each must produce. That is not a trick to make the model think harder; it is a structure that makes its reasoning checkable by you and lets you reject one stage without throwing away the rest.

Reach for it whenWhen a task has parts that depend on each other, or when you need to be able to verify an answer rather than just receive it.

Reasoning models already work through a problem internally, so "think step by step" adds nothing here - and spelling it out can make the output more verbose without making it more correct. Spend that space instead on naming the stages yourself, as headed sections, and on specifying what each must output. Add a verification stage that reaches the answer by a different route, which is the part that actually catches errors.

Worth knowingThe working it shows you is a presentation of its reasoning, not a transcript of it - a tidy, confident-looking table can still contain a wrong number. An independent check that does not reuse the first method's intermediate figures is the only part of this that genuinely verifies anything.
  • Skip 'think step by step'; name the stages instead.
  • Say what each stage must output.
  • Add a check that uses a different method, not the same numbers.
  • Ask it to label which claims rest on your facts.
  • Use gates between phases, not a flat checklist.
Example 1: Solving a Logic/Math Problem

Instead of

A train leaves Hyderabad at 3 PM traveling at 60 km/h. A car leaves Hyderabad at 3:30 PM on the same route traveling at 80 km/h. At what time will the car overtake the train?

Perplexity version

Solve this, and show the working in a form I can check.

Problem: A train leaves Hyderabad at 3 PM at 60 km/h. A car leaves Hyderabad at 3:30 PM on the same route at 80 km/h. When does the car overtake the train?

I do not need you to be told to think - you already do. What I need is the working laid out in a specific shape, because that is what makes an error findable:

## OUTPUT
A table with columns Quantity, Value, Unit, How I got it. One row each for: the train's head start distance, the relative speed, the time to close the gap, the overtake clock time. The "How I got it" cell must name the arithmetic, not just restate the answer.

Then one line: the answer.

Then a line headed "Sanity check" - compute the distance each vehicle has covered at the overtake time, independently of the method above, and confirm they match. If they do not match, say so and do not present the answer as final.

Then a line headed "Assumptions" - anything you had to assume: constant speeds, no stops, same route, train speed as average rather than top speed.

Finally: name the step where a student would most likely go wrong on this problem, and what the wrong answer would look like.

Example 2: Analyzing a Business Decision

Instead of

Is opening a second branch of my restaurant in Begumpet a good idea?

Perplexity version

Act as a business consultant. My restaurant is a successful biryani house in Kondapur, Hyderabad. I am considering a second branch in Begumpet.

Do not give me a verdict in one block. Structure the analysis in stages, because each stage is something I need to be able to argue with separately:

## STAGE 1 - WHAT YOU NEED FROM ME
List what you would need to know before any recommendation is worth having: current revenue and margin, how much of my success rests on my own presence at the Kondapur outlet, kitchen capacity, staff depth, available capital. Ask, do not assume. Stop here if the gaps are large enough to make stages 2 to 5 guesswork - tell me so.

## STAGE 2 - THE CASE FOR
At least three specific benefits of a Begumpet branch. Specific to Begumpet and to biryani, not generic expansion upside.

## STAGE 3 - THE CASE AGAINST
At least three risks. Include the ones owners typically underestimate: founder attention splitting, quality drift in the second kitchen, cannibalisation, the real cost of a second lease.

## STAGE 4 - MARKET
Begumpet against Kondapur: who lives and works there, what the competition looks like, how footfall patterns differ.

## STAGE 5 - RECOMMENDATION
A clear position, not a balanced shrug. Then the single most important thing I should establish before deciding, and how I would go about establishing it in the next thirty days.

Standing instruction: where you are reasoning from general restaurant-industry patterns rather than anything I told you, label it as such. I need to know which parts of this rest on my facts and which on your priors.

Example 3: Planning a Complex Task

Instead of

Give me a plan to launch a podcast.

Perplexity version

I want to launch a podcast about the history of Indian startups. Build me the full plan.

The useful structure here is phases with gates between them, not a flat list of steps - a flat list lets me start buying microphones before I have decided who the show is for.

## STRUCTURE
Three phases. For each phase: the steps in order, and then a "Gate" - the one question that must be answered before the next phase starts.

**Phase 1 - Pre-production:** niche and target audience; name and branding; format and episode length; equipment at three budget tiers in rupees (entry, mid, serious); hosting platform choice.

**Phase 2 - Production and post-production:** guest sourcing and outreach; recording setup including remote guests; editing workflow; show notes and transcripts; episode cadence and how much to bank before launch.

**Phase 3 - Launch and marketing:** directory submissions; launch-day sequence; distribution and clips; the first ten episodes' promotion; what to measure and what to ignore.

## ALSO
- Flag which steps most people do out of order, and what it costs them.
- Flag any step that is India-specific - payment for hosting, guest availability, which platforms Indian listeners actually use.
- Name the two or three steps that genuinely cannot be skipped, as distinct from the ones that only feel urgent.

Open a Canvas for the plan itself so I can tick items off and edit it as I go, rather than scrolling back through chat to find it. Keep your commentary on sequencing in the chat, not in the Canvas.
